What is Urban Sprawl? By: Rahul
It is low-density development surrounding a city. "The uncontrolled expansion of urban areas."
Some efforts to control the sprawl would to input “smart growth” by creating higher destiny communities with public transit, bike paths, and walking trails, surrounded by precious farmland and green spaces like wetlands and woodlands. We could also establish urban food belts which would limit growth to areas that are already developed.
This plan would aimed at protecting the towns few remaining farms, fields, and forests from being dug up and paved over and built on. We would be able to continue construction within the current urban boundary while have easy access of public transit and existing shopping malls, schools, recreational facilities, and other infrastructure, such as water and sewage systems. Then we could have more benefit from ecological services that farmlands and green spaces provide, like clean air and water, healthy soil, and habitat for wildlife. Also preventing any further exspansion would reduce greenhouse gases that cause global warming.
Mississauga is growing rapidly as it is the Canada's 6th largest city with a population of 713,443 as of 2011. The national average growth rate in Canada is 5.9%. Mississauga itself has a growth rate of 8.4%! At this rate Mississauga with have over 800,000 people as of 2031! There is not going to be enough land to comfortably sustain this many amount of people. One average home could be transformed into homes for hundreds of people by building up...

THINK OF THE FUTURE
Problems Now and In The Future
Many people may not even realize it, but these problems have already been started! Obesity has been increasing and taxes have been increased. In fact all the prices has been increased especially fuel for our everyday cars. In the 1900's gas usually costed less than a dollar for a liter! And now, it is about $1.20 per liter. It may not seem like much difference but people are usually buying 60 liters or more each stop. Imagine how much more this price will increase in the future!
The cost of living for an average family of 4 will cost over $12,000 per year as of 2015. This includes food, housing, clothes, transportation( a family car), personal care/hygiene, and entertainment. Our household pollution now is slowly killing us and we don't even know it! In the future the average home will most likely have 2 or more cars/vehicles which is like Mississauga now times 2! Imagine how much pollution there will be in the sky. Lastly the obesity/health rate. This will skyrocket out of control because since buildings will be build everywhere, people live literally right beside it. And another reason is is that soon the only transportation we will use is cars or buses. As our technology get more advanced we will be able to drive in the skies above us! So then we will have more pollution there! All these gasses can cause diseases that we don't even know exist! This is going to make our death rates much faster than now, which isn't good personally but makes our community more sustainable for the next generation. But if the death rates are higher than the birth rates, in a few decades, we could be in big trouble. We need these people such as engineers, doctors, farmers, and many more! They all contribute to make everyone's lives better. I think we should stop the production of gasoline cars and make many more hybrid cars so the pollution rate will drop extremely. To decrease the obesity rates and encourage people to exercise we should put pay parking in every parking lot so people will be encouraged to stop driving to work. And more pay bikes should be put all around Mississauga to let people have some exercise and get to their work/destination with less cost than the gas needed in a car plus the parking rate. |
